Inflorescence is an installation made by Jillian Barkley for Lightbox Gallery in July of 2018. Consisting of mirror boxes with plants inside, projections of flowers fractally abstracted via kaliedoscopic views, and a florally themed cocktail menu, Inflorescence's aesthetic merged the natural and "unnatural" together without conflict.
When she approached me, Jillian had hoped to further blur the distinctions between natural and unnatural in the auditory experience of the installation. In discussion, Jillian offered me ideas about hard and soft, warm and cold, and nautrual and unnatural sound pallettes she was interested in.
My most active contribution was to anchor the piece with field recordings of Prospect Park. The park, a piece of "planned wilderness", does not contradict itself in its liminal "natural/unnatural" identity but instead becomes something else entirely.
